Head Beach Campground - Phippsburg, Maine
Activities

No shortage of activities here! You're in Vacation Land!

The main activity will probably be hanging out in your camper or cabin, and spending time on our private, 300+ yard beach. But, some of the popular options include

  • Kayaking - we can help put you in touch with rentals and lessons
  • Hiking - Morse Mountain is a popular, small mountain hike less than 10 minutes away, rewarding you with breathtaking views of the coast at the top
  • Fishing - we can arrange deep sea fishing, or many people try their luck shore casting - striper fishing is popular at Fort Popham
  • Shopping - Hundreds of choices, including L.L.Bean in Freeport and the Maine Mall in South Portland - both less than an hour from the Campground, or visit Bath or Brunswick - both less than 30 minutes away with nice downtown shops and restaurants.

Head Beach

The beach is privately owned, but open to the public during the summer months and is a short walk from the Campground or any of the Cabins.

At 325+ yards of sandy beach, Head Beach is one of the largest privately owned sand beaches in the state of Maine. Protected by ledges on either side, the current is generally mild with small waves.

Beach hours are from 9am to 8pm, and the parking fee is $5.00 per day for non-registered guests. There are no vehicles or ATV’s allowed on the beach or sand dunes at any time. Access from the parking lot is a short walk over the dunes. Pets are not allowed. There are restrooms available on the parking side of the dunes.

Popham Beach State Park/Fort Popham

A pleasant, short drive from our facility, lie Fort Popham and Popham Beach State Park. Adjacent to Fort Popham, is a stretch of beach that lies at the bottom of the Kennebec River, where it meets the Atlantic. When the tide changes, you can see the river flowing into the ocean. It's a popular spot for shore casting - with stripers and blue fish being landed throughout most days. Limited free parking at the fort or roadside, or, you can park at Percy's General Store for a small daily fee. Be sure and leave time for a shore dinner or fried clams at Spinney's Restaurant

Popham Beach State Park, a couple miles down the coast from Fort Popham, is one of Maine's great treasures and most popular beaches. Be sure and get there before 11:00, or after 1:30 on the best beach days - the State Park parking area fills up before noon on the best days, especially weekends. The fine white sand is one reason for it's popularity - the sandbar at low tide another, where you can walk out to an island. The state park beach is protected by lifeguards, but watch out for the notorious cross tides just the same.
